Bertelsmann. Check out their growth strategy. Education.

Reuters have stated that Bertelsmann are now actively and aggresively executing their Educational strategy.
This is reflected on the Bertelsmann site:

Bertelsmann entered the global education business in early 2012, shortly after Thomas Rabe took office as Chairman & CEO. In the context of Bertelsmann’s corporate strategy with its four priorities, building the education business primarily falls under the "expansion of growth businesses.”...

Bertelsmann has defined three specific segments in which the company will advance its educational activities in the years ahead: e-learning, medical education, and services for universities.

I applaud Bertelsmann. Thomas Rabe, their CEO obviously has a viable plan, and the goodwill and support of his organisation . Good for him.

There are obvious parallels between what I would like to do, and Bertelmanns vision.
Medical education would be covered by Sports Medicine, Engineering would be transport based, services for Universities...

As I was involved with Lotus when I initially made my proposal, it was based around their owners and Shareholders Petronas Proton Lotus with a media/IT partner, at that time, Bernama and IBM.

Today, maybe Petronas Proton Lotus Bertelsmann Apple.

Proton and Lotus can supply hardware, Petronas and Bertelsmann have education as core competencies. Apple an IT company are keen to get into Automotive.

Petronas Proton and Lotus know each other. Bertelsmann and Apple would need to be approached by a high level executive team made up of representatives of PetronasF1 and Petronas University, Proton and Proton R3, Lotus Cars and Lotus F1.

I feel this would work. I can't make this happen alone.

Dr Mahathir Petronas and Lotus advisor has commented on Lotus product range.

Recently, Lotus have been sending out press releases on the upcoming Paris Motor Show.
The inference is we will see a glimpse of the future product range.
The ex PM of Malaysia is the advisor to Petronas and Lotus. He is hugely influencial.
Before Tony Fernandes embarked upon Air Asia he made sure he got his blessing.

Tun Mahathir ordered the building of SepangF1 circuit.
Petronas sponsor the Malaysian F1. Proton are sponsors of LotusF1 run by Tony Fernandes.

Here are Tun Mahathirs comments on the new product line up from Lotus. This is taken from a recent Chedet entry, entitled:  PROTON'S PROGRESS

5. My next stop was the Lotus factory where the Elise and Evora sports cars were being produced. Lotus had not done well and was losing money. But the new CEO, Dany Bahar has put new life into the management bringing in experienced people from well-known racing teams and sports car producers.

6. New sports cars were being designed and they looked as good as the Ferraris and the Aston Martins. I test drove a turbo-charged Proton Exora, an electric Tesla which Lotus was building for an American company and the Lotus Evora.

7. A lot of Proton engineers were working with Lotus engineers contributing to the development of Lotus cars.

As you probably know I have bugged numerous people with my MUM project. Tun Mahathir is among them!
Unlike Tony, I have not recieved any blessing!

In Paris,I have to assume that we are going to the concept cars that Tun Mahathir descibes "as good as Ferraris and Aton Martins."

I'm flying back to the UK with Tony's Airline on Sunday. I'll miss Tony's LotusF1 team racing in Germany. Hopefully, they will pick up a point or two.

I'm looking forward to seeing my father and the neighbours. I have a board meeting on Friday. It will be nice to have a chat with everyone.

My focus is now on Johor. Any influencial people with access to finance and Tun Mahathir please feel free to contact me!

Lotus Snetterton. Thanks to my old mentor Marvin. Mark Webber mounts Heikki

Today I came across a professional quality video of  the Snetterton Lotus weekend.

It is nice to see that Lotus past and present make an appearance. Colin Chapman's wife makes a short appearance linking the two eras. She does not have a 'Norfolk" accent.
Lotus actually started out in London. During my Ford years I worked in the Aveley prototype shop with a gentleman named Marvin Ford. He used to wheel panels on a piece work basis for Lotus in those days. The aluminium panels were oxyacetylene welded, mounted to the car, clear lacquered and raced.
Marvin was a highly skilled tradesman, and a very nice man. I have long since lost contact with him. However, I have a copper kettle at home, that I made as part of my college work. It owes more to Marvin than me, and stands proudly in front of the fire... Marvin, many thanks for your help.

This is possibly some of Marvin's handywork. Lotus 16

Today, F1 cars are composite, and very safe. Mark Webber tried to mount the Lotus of Heikki Kovalainen  this weekend and was airborne. He walked away unhurt.
If that had happened in Colin Chapmans day we would have been mourning the loss of a life. Safety has certainly benefitted from the technological advancements.

As usual I am popping the odd email and text to those in a position to help move the Motorsport University Malaysia project forward.
Still waiting for a positive response. Enjoy the day.

Who's going to win this weekend?

Who's going to win on the weekend?  The F1 and the England Germany match.
A simple enough question. No disrespect, but I don't think it will be Lotus. Congratulations though on reaching 500 GP's under your present guise.
More interestingly, the Germans have employed a psychic octopus to predict the England Germany match!

Sehr Interessant!
I must say that I consulted a respected psychic about this project. Mr P. Ganeson who is speaking this coming week at a Silva mind course meeting. I look forward to seeing him again.
The result was very positive. Johor was a very strong yes. The success of the project was also rated highly, both commercially and socially.
Sadly, I didn't enquire about the time frame! Lucky I'm patient...
I'll be watching the game with my German friend Tilo.
One of us will be going home happy. Life will go on for the other.

Lotus range extender. Fagor Ederlan to productionise engine. F1 intoduces 107% rule

Well Proton and Lotus management have now been locked in a room for two days. Brainstorming.
I was not in the room. So nothing to report!
A couple of years ago I went to the Geneva motor show. I was supposed to meet Mike Kimberley, at that time Group lotus CEO. Mike got called away.
I was fortunate enough to speak with a few of the engineers. A version of the range extender engine was on show then. It is nice to see it is being productionised.
pic borrowed fron Automotiveworld.com

The BBC reports that F1 will reapply the 107% rule for qualifying.
Among other changes are a re-introduction of the 107% rule, which prevents any driver whose quickest time in the first qualifying session is slower than 107% of the fastest from taking part in the race.
I believe that Lotus F1 are too strong to fall foul of this rule. It will keep the new boys on their collective toes.
Sitting in the paddock watching the race as a spectator would be a very embarassing situation for any team or Driver.
It be interested to hear Alex Yoong talk about this rule on the weekend.  I like Alex, but sadly he has some negative experience with this...

Returning to the range extender engine. I have just viewed a video of Mark Reuss discussing GM's Volt. GM have built their own range extender.
I worked with Mark in the past. I'm pleased he has done well for himself. General Motors appear to be making a good recovery from their bankruptcy.
Here's the video:

SepangF1 Centre of Excellence. Singapore way to go.

Today, The Star (Malaysia) reports that LotusF1 are progressing well with their centre of excellence in SepangF1.
Lotus facility in Sepang to include wind tunnel
KUALA LUMPUR: The Lotus Racing team are looking at developing a state-of-the-art technology, research and development centre based in Malaysia. The site will be at the Sepang International Circuit.

The facility will include a top class F1 wind tunnel, backed by a world class computational fluids dynamics (CFD) which incorporates vehicle dynamics and production facilities.

“We are already moving towards getting this project off the ground and we are hopeful that it could be completed by this year,” said Tony.(Fernandes).

I thought I would add my Bernama interview.

This weekend I met a 'Sensei' who's son is training to be a racing driver. He has contacts in Singapore motorsport. He has taken my contact info. Hopefully that will lead somewhere.
The Sensai has trained with Mohamed Ali, Joe Frazier,Larry Holmes, and Sugar Ray Leonard among others.

He is very good even at 75 years of age! The resident dojo sensai video'd him teaching. If it makes youtube, I'll embed it on the blog.
In the meantime this a Star newspaper video. It shows the sensai, Winston, and his son Fei Hoong (Future World Champion).

Anyway, good luck to Tony Fernandes, and his team. I am sure that Group Lotus are very comfortable in Bukit Jalil...

Private investors and Singapore may be the way to go.

Duke of York visits Hethel Engineering centre and Lotus F1

I have arrived in KL. Already my buddy and sometimes co conspirator Herry has told me to get some figures together in order to promote my project.

Talking of which... Arsenal football club are selling a business case book through their educational partner the London Metropolitan business school. Financially, Arsenal are always held up as being fiscally responsible.
Arsenal educational material

Maybe Tony Fernandes will let students share his business plan for West Ham, and make comparisons with LotusF1 and AirAsia... I diversify!

Herry and Tilo have an ongoing  project, I participate in from time to time. They have assisted me in my graphic presentations plus my password protected webpage video.

Whilst I have been adding to Air Asia's bottom line the Duke of York visited the Hethel Engineering centre. Group Lotus donated the land for this from their own campus and are partners in the project.
Whilst in the area the Duke also popped in to see the Lotus F1 team in Hingham.
The Duke of York with Tony Fernandes

I borrowed the pic from the EDP24
Maybe the Duke could suggest a working relationship between LotusF1 and the Hethel Engineering Centre.
Group lotus already partner the hethel Engineering Centre...
This is a quote from EDP24 article on the centre proposed expansion:

Construction work is under way on a £2.4m extension to the engineering centre at Hethel to make space for 11 new start-up businesses.

The centre has helped establish a series of new companies - particularly in advanced and low carbon manufacturing - since it first opened in 2006.

The article goes on to say...

Ann Steward, portfolio holder for economic development at Norfolk County Council - which helped fund the creation of Hethel in 2006 with Eeda and South Norfolk Council - added: "Since we opened it four years ago, Hethel has really made a name for itself as one of the best centres in the country for supporting innovation in engineering and manufacturing.

Well I'm happy that Tony Fernandes has had the Duke of York and Dr Mahathir visiting in the last couple of days.
Maybe Dr Mahathir popped into the Hethel Engineering Centre too...
Banner of Hethel Engineering Centre partners

I think that Proton/Lotus donating land too, and partnering an educational centre in Norfolk is laudable.
Obviously, the Duke of York thinks so too!
I can see why Proton and Lotus got involved in this. I suppose signing the land over didn't cost anything. The local government were supportive.

Proton don't own the circuit in Johor. The Iskandar region, whilst encouraging investment in the region are probably waiting for investors to approach them.

It would be interesting to know what kind of a deal Lotus/Proton and their major shareholder Petronas could get on the Johor circuit?

The Motorsport University Malaysia banner could then read:

Proton: Group Lotus: Petronas: Iskandar Development Region: Cranfield University: UTM : LotusF1: Mercedes-GP Petronas Formula one team : AirAsia : itunes student hostels : Backpacking Asia (Foreign students will want to explore) : Maxis : BBC Open University: Bernama TV :

Just a thought

I'm off to Malaysia on Wednesday. Maybe I'll bump into Tun!

I'm flying to Malaysia on Wednesday with Air Asia. Yesterday Tun Mahathir officially opened the Lotus F1 corporate HQ.
I gave Sufi his PA a hardcopy of my Slideshare presentation, and he has been made aware of my project. He has not however corresponded with me!
I'm sure he must have flown Air Asia, maybe I'll bump into him in Stansted Airport...
Tun does the honours

For those of you who don't know Tun is the ex PM of Malaysia.

I have a gut feeling that the time is right for this project to take off.

Group Lotus are showing off their green credentials in Geneva.

Hybrid drivetrain designed and developed by Lotus Engineering

I pinched the photo from Paultan.org

The last time I went to the Geneva Motor show it was to meet former Group Lotus CEO Mike Kimberley. He was called away to a meeting with Proton. I did meet some of his team and gave them my presentation.

Later on I did get to speak to Mike on the phone. He is an interesting person.

I am presently annoying the new Group Lotus CEO and his Motorsport manager. (Among others!)

I would love it if Tun Mahathir would use his role as Proton/Petronas adviser to promote the project.

This is the hardcopy I gave to Sufi for Tun.

Tony Fernandes and Paul Fletcher... great minds think alike!

I read Tony Fernanades interview in Autosport today.
In it he states that his F1 project is receiving funding from Proton car company...
Q. Proton is putting money into the project now?

TF: Yes they are. And obviously they will have some technological spin-offs and hopefully they can use our platform to show the world... obviously they have had some maybe not so positive experiences on some television programmes, and I think they could possibly use being in F1 to show they make world class cars as well. So it's a technological collaboration, there is money behind it as well, but the main drive will be to improve Lotus.

Wow!

He goes on to say...

Q. This team obviously grew out of the Litespeed Formula 3 team that was considering building it's own chassis. Could we see a Lotus F3 chassis in the coming years?

TF: We had two or three developmental teams and it shows again our seriousness about this that we had put money behind Fairuz in the Renault series and we will assist Litespeed as well. Both of those teams will be development teams for us...
We have put a substantial budget behind that because it is very important to not only develop future drivers but to develop engineers and know-how, and commercial-world know-how in running a Formula 1 team.

I would like to say that this mirrors the opinion of Paul Fletcher MBE Founder and Managing Partner StadiArena.
Paul and Tony think alike... Smart Guys!

"We want to open a football university — the first ever in this country. There are plenty of places where you can study football itself but nowhere where you can learn about the financial, commercial and social aspects of the game, from advertising and pitch technology to the business side.

(Please read my previous entry)

He (Tony) finishes this answer by saying...

My experience at Air Asia, one of the first things I did when we made some money, was to build an academy and we trained our own pilots and engineers etc and we invested a lot of money. When I looked at West Ham the thing I liked about them most was the academy. So we are putting a lot of effort into the development side of the team.

Driver development for Lotus F1 is under Alex Yoong. Proton Head of Racing is Tengku Djan. They have both worked for A1 Team Malaysia. Djan has raced for Proton and Petronas, and is currently involved in 'Drifting'.

My advice is read my proposal. Talk to Petronas about the synergies between your wants and needs and theirs.
I don't think Paul or Tony are stupid!
Below is a slideshare version of my proposal.

Asean Strategic Leadership Institute 2010 Automotive Conference

l will be helping ASLI promote their future Automotive Conference:

It will coincide with the Kuala lumpur Auto Show.
Official Auto Show logo

Proton, the Malaysian car company that owns Group Lotus intend to show their cars in the Geneva Auto show for the first time this year.
Presently, the Detroit Auto show is on. I have been many times. Not this year though!
Here is a link to the Detroit News. It is an interactive flash demo allowing you to design your own concept car! The Detroit News and Freep both give the show good coverage. Incidently, China has just become the largest buyer of automobiles in the world overtaking America. So I imagine the Shanghai show is gaining relevance.

I went to last years ASLI promoted Automotive conference with Alex Yoong as my guest. The conference did not revolve around Motorsport, and as such Alex probably wondered why he was there! We did have several chats with the Bufori representatives. Alex has done some 'Motorsport' work for them since.

It did give me some credibility and it was nice to know that Alex is sympathetic towards my project. (Motorsport University Malaysia).

If Michael Schumacher is reading this please feel free to contact me and I'll see if I can get you in this year...

I do think if ASLI want Motorsport specific people to attend they might want to organise the topics for discussion to reflect that.

I have been invited to paticipate this year. As such I will be expected to present a slideshow for discussion.

As Motorsport University Malaysia is still in the proposal stage I may use the one below for discussion purposes.

You will see some project figures for potential students on page 36. These figures add up to ten thousand virtual students. You must remember that I felt these figures made sense at the time (3+ years ago).

On my webpage, I have revised these figures to reflect the expectations of Malaysia's most successful private University, Limkokwing.
The CEO of this University is setting the bar at One Million virtual students in the next ten years.

In corporate circles we benchmark against the best, or our perceived competition, so my more recent webpage reflects the Limkokwing goal...

My benchmark for virtual students Limkokwing

“I hope that within 10 years, we will reach one million students. You can’t have one million on campus but you can have one million students if you have a lot of them doing online courses,” he adds (taken from an interview with the Limkokwing CEO published on the 28th May 2009 in the Star)

I might add that in the initial slideshare presentation, I mention my history with group Lotus, and their apparent ambivalence (uncertain or unable to decide about what course to follow; - wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn) towards the project.

Well, we have a whole raft of new management at Group Lotus, and a new entity in LotusF1 so I hope this will be reflected in their attitude to Motorsport University Malaysia.

Additionally, Petronas are a many faceted organisation. They are a major shareholder in Proton and group Lotus, as well as sponsors of Mercedes F1 among many other Motorsport teams. Perhaps they will give this project the consideration it deserves.

A Name does mean something... Why Lotus?

I hope everyone enjoyed their little holiday. It's freezing and snowy here. Sadly a lot of football matches are being postponed and travelling can be hazardous!
Talking of football... Today I commented on an article on the Crash website.
The article refers to Lotus F1.
The person after me made this comment:
Sorry to disappoint all you doubters, but a name does mean a lot. Take football as an example. 50 years ago a team might be made up of players all born within 10 miles of the ground. Now a Premiership team can be made entirely of overseas players and run by a far-east consortium, yet the fans still believe it's their team.

Chelsea and Man City are foreign (not British) owned or managed. So does the same apply to Formula One?
For some people Yes and for others No.

Certainly, Mercedes F1 are not German based or managed(Ref Ross Brawn)...

Did having Brawn and Scumacher at Ferrari make the team any less 'Ferrari'

Ross and Michael doing their version of the Italian job

Many feel Valentino Rossi should ride for Ducati. Yamaha and Honda before them felt otherwise...

I have written to a few influencial people regarding Motorsport University Malaysia. So lets hope the vision soon becomes reality...

To quote Bob dylan 'The time they are a changing!'

Tony fernandes interview on Autosport.com

Here is a small portion of an interview with Tony Fernandes. LotusF1 team principle: This interview is from Autosport.com

Q. What about the business opportunities that you see in Formula 1?

TF. I'm not so sure that the traditional form of just sticking the name on car just for branding purposes will be enough going forward. I think Formula 1 teams have to look at other revenue streams as well and over the next three or four years we have many ideas.

Q. Can you explain the ownership structure of your team and how the Lotus brand fits in?

TF: Lotus is a complicated brand. Obviously Proton in Malaysia owns Lotus, and we have a licensing agreement with them. I think over time that relationship will solidify more and more, and Group Lotus will probably buy into the team at some stage. More and more technology from our side will go into Lotus cars, we will promote Lotus Cars closely, and I see it in time being no different from how Ferrari works.

Group Lotus and Lotus F1 were always seperate. They used to both come under Colin Chapman.
Perhaps Tony has a bit more of Colin's DNA than the recent Group Lotus management team.

It will be interesting to see how this relationship develops...

I know for a fact that several senior members of Tony's team are well aware of my proposal.
Due to the fact that SepangF1 circuit was not interested in partnering my proposal, I shifted focus to Johor. Should Tony make a similar proposal to the SepangF1 management he may get a more welcoming response.

In fairness to SepangF1 they were keen to participate when I represented Lotus. It was only when (Group) Lotus showed absolutely no interest that the negativity set in.

I still feel that Johor has a lot to gain from this project.

Once again I have embedded the TV interview I had when SepangF1 was still my main focus.

More than 1000 apply for F1 jobs in Norfolk

Today a local Norfolk paper reports that 1000 people have applied for jobs in the new Lotus F1 facility.
In an earlier blog I noted that 6000 people had applied in Malaysia.
The Lotus name is still strong.
I sincerely hope they have the foresight to get involved in MUM!
Below I have embedded my TV interview with Bernama. At the time my focus was on SepangF1 as a probable site for the 'Facility'.

Contacted CEO Lotus F1

My blog and website are in the public domain. My website has a video which is password protected.
I have given the password to Tony Fernandes organisation.
As I have stated previously, this project will compiment the new F1 initiative perfectly.

Here is a video of Tony explaining his reasoning behind his F1 involvement.

It is my hope that Tony will view my proposal. If he does, I feel he will see the potential immediately. I need
Active Support from

Many thanks to all those who have helped me thus far...

Air Asia's Fernandes to run Lotus F1 for now...

Autosport have released an article on Lotus F1 boss

Lotus boss plans to step down soon

It appears Tony Fernandes will step down at the beginning of the season...

"My job is AirAsia and I just want to make sure that we [Lotus] have the right direction, the right imaging and the right future, the right strategic plan and marketing."

In a further article in the NZHerald he is quoted as saying...

"Malaysia has put a lot of money into F1, and it has a fantastic hardware - the Sepang track; universities with engineering courses; composite manufacture. But it doesn't have the soft side - drivers, engineers, management. I want to take that and build it up in F1.

I would have to disagree!
Yes Malaysia does have Universities and Engineering courses. Up until now it did not have the Motorsport infrastructure to employ Motorsport type graduates. England is presently the major source of these types of jobs.

It is imperative that MUM is considered in the big picture of Malaysia's involvement in F1. This is a unique opportunity.

Tony later went on to say...He has a simple motto:

"Do it because you love it, or don't be involved." And an equally simple mantra: "Take underdeveloped marketing opportunities, monetise them, and bring back value to the community."

My proposal for MUM Motorsport University Malaysia is now on Slideshare.

This proposal dovetails perfectly with the new developments within Malaysia.

I have embedded it below:

Daily Mail (UK) confirms Lotus entry into F1

One of Britain's fabled motor racing names Lotus to return to Formula One for 2010 season >
This is the heading in todays Daily Mail (UK)
As previously mentioned this fits in well with the MUM proposal.
Local Malaysian politicians seem to think the government will make an announcement after the Singapore GP.
Alex Yoong should be working for ESPN in Asia that weekend. As Alex has been kind enough to visibly support MUM I would love to hear his appraisal of the latest developments.
I'm in the UK right now, so I'll be listening to Eddie Jordan and the BBC team.
I sincerely hope some of the young guns, particularly, Alex and Tengku Djan lend their support to the MUM proposal if asked. They are both in ideal positions to be a positive influence.

I've put my old Bernama TV interview here for those of you who have not seen it...
