Southampton University to open a campus in Johor. Lotus v Lotus carries on (YAWN). Albert Lam on his vision for electric cars.
This is from the NST (New Strait Times)
KUALA LUMPUR: The University of Southampton, world renowned for its engineering programme, will open its first overseas campus in Johor next year. The University of Southampton Malaysia Campus (USMC) will be sited at Iskandar Malaysia's EduCity in Nusajaya, Johor, and its first intake will comprise of 60 students.
They can choose any of its undergraduate and postgraduate courses in electrical, mechanical and aerospace engineering...
Khaled (Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin) said with 403 private colleges, 20 public universities, 45 private universities and 15 foreign branch campuses, Malaysia had great potential to tap into the education need of the region...
"We aim to recruit an additional 150,000 foreign students by 2015," he said, adding there would be no ratio for local and international students for private universities.
It would seem that Johor is crying out for educational partners. It has an FIA approved track that needs redevelopment.
I can certainly see a synergy here.
Meanwhile the Lotus v Lotus saga drags on.BBC
Malaysia has three F1 teams it sponsors or owns. What a crying shame they can't all just funnel their energy and technology through a University.

British students consider studying abroad. Newcastle Uni Promo video.
johnmansfield@motorsportunivesitymalaysia.com
This week, in the UK much has been made of the public spending cuts. Many students are unable to get places at UK Universities.
The BBC showed a clip of the Petronas Towers and a representative of Newcastle University asking people to consider studying in Malaysia.
Newcastle have opened a campus in Johor.
Here is a promo video for Newcastle University:
My sister went to Newcastle University many years ago. I attended her graduation. In a week or two my niece (Kate), will be studying Law there.
I wish her all the best!
I have met lawyers through my volunteering with the local Citizens Advice Bureau in Basildon. Without good contacts within the law community it is difficult to get started on a good career.
Luckily, Kate is a lot smarter than her uncle. I'm sure she will get excellent grades, and do very well for herself.
The last time I visisted my old College (Chelmsford) it was to get paperwork for the American immigration authorities. Most of the teachers had left. Chelmsford is now a University. I have to be truthful and say I did not enjoy studying there!
Life is always throwing up odd situations. Here I am promoting an educational project. It is my dream project, and I am sure it will come to fruition. However, I myself am not an academic.
Such is life.

Johor Circuit Singaporeans and FederationD
FederationD logo
They are hoping to build a track, possibly in Johor for this purpose!
As you know, I have proposed using the Johor track for my Motorsport University. Up until now I haven't approached the circuit per se. When I approached the SepangF1 circuit initially, I was in the employ of Group Lotus. Whilst the circuit was very interested at that time, Group Lotus management weren't very supportive!
I see no reason to go through the whole process again, only to find that various key people sit on their hands, frightened of making a decision (Which amounts to making a decision!).
I have found a Singaporean magazine 'Torque' that has spoken to the circuit. They are encouraging Singaporeans to buy the circuit.
Singaporeans are very entrepeneurial. I'm sure they could make a success of it.
The Torque article says they spoke to the circuit management. I quote from the article here:
It was after a visit to the J Circuit last month that I suddenly had a brainwave.
Instead of waiting for the arrival of the Changi Motorsports Hub (CMH), someone or 'someones' should buy over the circuit and thoroughly renovate it.
I spoke to the circuit manager and he said that "it's going to cost about RM$2 million" to make it almost 'new'.
For all of you forex newbies, that's slightly more than 800,000 Singapore dollars. That's all?
This is 0.4% of the estimated cost to build the CMH i.e. the CMH costs 250 times more.
There is NO way that the CMH is going to be 250 times or for that matter, 25 times, better than a newly-refurbished J Circuit.
As I am proposing adding a University the 250 times figure might only be 100 times! And Johor circuit would compare very favourably with Changi (Maybe not 25 times better!)
For those interested. Here is my early slideshare presentation.

Tony fernandes interview on Autosport.com
Q. What about the business opportunities that you see in Formula 1?
TF. I'm not so sure that the traditional form of just sticking the name on car just for branding purposes will be enough going forward. I think Formula 1 teams have to look at other revenue streams as well and over the next three or four years we have many ideas.
Q. Can you explain the ownership structure of your team and how the Lotus brand fits in?
TF: Lotus is a complicated brand. Obviously Proton in Malaysia owns Lotus, and we have a licensing agreement with them. I think over time that relationship will solidify more and more, and Group Lotus will probably buy into the team at some stage. More and more technology from our side will go into Lotus cars, we will promote Lotus Cars closely, and I see it in time being no different from how Ferrari works.
Group Lotus and Lotus F1 were always seperate. They used to both come under Colin Chapman.
Perhaps Tony has a bit more of Colin's DNA than the recent Group Lotus management team.
It will be interesting to see how this relationship develops...
I know for a fact that several senior members of Tony's team are well aware of my proposal.
Due to the fact that SepangF1 circuit was not interested in partnering my proposal, I shifted focus to Johor. Should Tony make a similar proposal to the SepangF1 management he may get a more welcoming response.
In fairness to SepangF1 they were keen to participate when I represented Lotus. It was only when (Group) Lotus showed absolutely no interest that the negativity set in.
I still feel that Johor has a lot to gain from this project.
Once again I have embedded the TV interview I had when SepangF1 was still my main focus.

Video shoot complete. Editing and web page in progress
It is my intention to send the video to some of the people at the conference, in the hope that they will be suitably impressed. Impressed enough to view
http://www.motorsportuniversitymalaysia.com/
Shortly, I will be adding content pertaining to the plan and strategy for Johor and Shanghai campuses.
I have every confidence that they will then make the right decision, and contact me with a view to making the vision a reality.
The video will be available for viewing by invite only.
Tilo (http://www.samasama.de/index.php) helping me with my new website, and video editing.
Herry (http://www.itv2.de/) shot the video.
Unlike the video the website is available for public viewing. I am hoping that this will be a first class site. I am responsible for the content. Other more capable people will look after the graphical side.
The ASLI conference went well. I asked one or two questions and networked.
Alex Yoong gave his support and sat with me for the two days... raising my profile!
Thanks Alex! (Sorry no picture of Alex and me) waiting for ASLI to send me one

Motorsport University Malaysia flyer ready
2nd Kuala Lumpur Automotive conference 2009

I have had a flyer made, which I have sent to the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute.
It outlines my Asean + 1 proposal.
I am 100% focussed on this project.
In the past, I have contacted Universities both in Malaysia and abroad regarding this project. They have always been very positive.
If you go into slide share presentation above, and view page 2 you will see the Bernama survey results.
The results of this survey suggest that it is not only the Universities that support the setting up of a Motorsport University in Malaysia.
I would like to think that if a similar survey were to be conducted in China a similar result would be recorded.
Hence my ASEAN + 1 strategy makes sense on many levels
It is my intention to promote the MUM project at this conference. It would be nice to think that educational institutions both local and foreign would take the opportunity to attend this conference and make there support for Motorsport University Malaysia known to local Automotive companies supporting this conference.

*** I would like to make it clear I am not a speaker at this event. I am not receiving payment for promoting either the conference, or the Motorsport University Malaysia project.
I have written to several institutions and people who I feel would benefit from this conference. I am pleased to report that a well known driver and media personality has agreed to come on Wednesday. The person says that my vision for motorsports in Malaysia is the same as his.
