Senior Advisor Role. Me and Dr. Mahathir
I am a Senior advisor on a travel website. As such I don't have to do much work, I just advise other people how to. I enjoy it. Not everyone takes any notice. Such is life.
In Malaysia they have a very influencial Senior Adviser. Dr. Mahathir. He is the official advisor to Petronas the national oil company, and Proton, the national car company.
He is far more influencial than me.
On occasions Dr.M (as he is often referred to in Malaysia) often acts as the spokesman for Proton.
He has stated that Proton is profitable, and is not actively looking to tie up with a partner.

KUALA LUMPUR: PROTON HOLDINGS BHD [] is financially stable and sees no hurry in merging with other car manufactures, according to its adviser Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
"Financially, Proton is still okay. We too are not very anxious to merge at this moment,” the former premier told reporters after launching First Sovereign Advisory Sdn Bhd on Friday, Sept 17.
Dr Mahathir was asked to comment on the national carmaker’s possible plan for merger after recent news report stated that DRB-Hicom was not actively looking to acquire a stake in Proton.
Proton own Lotus. Lotus are spending a lot of cash on new products. I have to think that this investment money comes from Proton. Proton is Malaysian government owned.
This brings me to my proposal. As one senior adviser to another, I would like to ask Dr.M to have a good look at the Motorsport University Malaysia proposal, after which, realising the enormous potential benefits he should recommend a huge funding allocation in order to make the dream a reality.
Dr. Mahathir will be at the ASLI Automotive conference. If I am lucky he may get to see my presentation there. Stranger things have happened!

I have borrowed a small portion just illustrate the numbers bandied about. This refers to malaysia only and is taken from the ASLI webpage.
By 2015, the government aims to achieve RM115 billion in revenue and provide 2 million jobs by deploying key strategies aimed at increasing high-end travelers and promoting high-growth tourism segments.
As I write it is about 5 ringitt to a British pound, so Malaysia is looking at a 20 Billion pound industry!

In any 24-hour period, there will be 45,000 Open University students working online.
BBC online articleMy proposal would complement this. People visit Britain to visit Oxford and Cambridge. Because they are famous University towns. Students, both local and foreign will add to the economy. The University will create jobs, not only for lecturers, but a whole slew of support staff.
As this will be a physical site with a virtual arm, the project will 'Advertise' the area. The synergy between this project, Proton, Tourism, a Knowledge based economy, a tourist based economy, are very apparent to me.

Bernama article on DRB Hicom. Proton for sale?
Bernama has an article today:
It relates to DRB Hicom and it's finances.
Part of the article refers to the possible sale of Proton to DRB Hicom.
DRB Hicom presently have agreements in place with Volkswagen and Westfield cars.

Hicom already have a college dedicated to automotive study.
Motorsport University Malaysia would have a great synergy with this potential new entity.
Just to change the subject slightly. I have added a video from youtube showing the R3 division of Proton.
R3 is the motorsport division of Proton. Tengku Djan heads it up. Oh Kah Beng is GM for Lotus cars Malaysia.
I'm sure they enjoy their jobs! All the best guys.

Investors welcomed.Uk targets student visa's
In the UK the new government has targetted student visa's as a way of reducing immigration into the UK.
Supposedly, this will not impact people coming to the UK for bona fide degree courses.
More people seem to want to go to college than there are places to accomodate them.
The MUM project is still my main focus.

Proton to issue 20% of Lotus to new Dany Bahar Management team. Does Tengku Djan have a plan?
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend.
Today I read that Proton is contemplating (giving) issuing 20% of Lotus to Dany Bahar and his team. This is by way of an incentive to turn Group Lotus into a profit making entity.
The sentence below is taken from a BorneoPost article.
Proton was also contemplating to issue new shares amounting to 20 per cent of Lotus to its new management as a motivating tool to help in making the turnaround plan a reality.
Previously, I have made an entry where this was a 40% share to Dany Bahar.
I have to assume ownership must have been on the table when Dany Bahar was brought onboard.
What has this got to do with Motorsport University Malaysia?
Well, other than Dany has shown absolutely no interest. Nothing I suppose!
Proton have their own Motorsport Division, headed by Tengku Djan. Whilst I have been able to talk to several Lotus CEO's, Tengku Djan has been very non communicative.
Djan is also a successful Drifter. He has taken part in Red Bull sponsored events, and has helped produce the Proton Satria Lotus machine. So there is a connection between him and Dany. Dany was marketing chief for Red Bull before joining Ferrari and now Lotus.
Ultimately they have the same management team above them.

I have sent my proposal to Proton Management. I obviously presented an early iteration to Group Lotus management when I was there. It was not well received at that time. However, the management that poop pooped the idea have all since left Lotus.
Djan worked about 3 metres from me during this period. He was very quiet. He still is.
Djan has been aware of this proposal for a long period. He is head of Motorsport within Proton.
Does he have a plan?

Universities putting their lectures on itunes. Time to change the mantra.
As you probably know I am promoting MUM. The basic concept is to set up an institute of higher learning on a race circuit.
One side of the equation we have cars workshops lecture halls... all based at a working circuit.
On the other side I see virtual learning.
Today, I read an article on the BBC:

Open University claims record iTunes downloads
The article is very interesting:
The global figure for downloads from iTunes U has reached 250 million.
"The way people want to learn is changing," says Open University vice-chancellor, Martin Bean.
The Open University, once parodied for its late-night television shows, is now pioneering the use of the internet to reach its students.
Chart toppers
It began putting material on Apple's iTunes U service in June 2008 - and in two years has had 20 million items downloaded.
"There is a real worldwide hunger for learning," he says.
Such iTunes downloads are now available from many leading universities - putting lectures and materials in reach of an online audience.
Oxford University last month announced that there had been more than three million downloads of its tracks on iTunes U.
The current top 10 includes Cambridge University's "The art of asking the right question" and Warwick University's "Sex in the Ancient World".
I still find it hard to believe that I could not convince Lotus that this project has potential. I have to assume it is a bit like GM.
At GM the mantra was "We can't make money from small cars".
At Lotus it was "We never make money from training". (Sadly Lotus don't make money period.)
Maybe it's time to change the mantra...
One million downloads at RM50 (10 Pounds) is RM50 million.
That sounds like a revenue stream to me.
The new management team are commited to turning a profit. This obviously has the potential to do so.
Thought I would add a positive review of the Satria.

Basildon Essex is home to FP1 (Foggy Petronas) production bikes!
This weeks Motorcycle news (UK) has a double paged article on the Petronas production motorbike, the FP1.

It was designed and manufactured by MSXI based in Basildon,Essex. This is actually very close to where I live in the UK.
MSXI set up initially in Pitsea, also near my home over a Barclays bank branch. Shelley Jackson, a recruiter now based in Norfolk, was an early representative.
I quote from the article:
'The business that produced the first batch has since changed hands,but the bikes are still there, now in the possession Arrk R&D, which also retains key MSXI staff who worked on the FPI.'
The article goes on to say...
In fact, the FP1 did go on sale in 2005- but only one dealership, in Malaysia called Naza Bikers Dream- where a pair were still for sale in 2009 for £31,433 each ...
Auction House, Bonhams values them at about £15-25,000 as they are so rare. In January 2003 75 road bikes were built by MSXI in July 2003 a second batch passes homologation (Doesn't say how many). The article quotes a former MSXI employee,Tony White as saying ' It was a great project to work onthat culminated in the build of 150 great bikes-'The final paragraph goes on to state:
So keen are they (Petronas) to distance themselves from the abortive project do they appear to be, even the rights to the intellectual property in the bikes have been assigned to an apparently unrelated firm- the mysterious Isle of Man- registered Brumby Corporation.
I found this article interesting. I would have loved to get these bikes for Motorsport University Malaysia. The Math data would have been interesting to use. The whole history could be used as a lesson in risk management and the Motorsport business.
Petronas are hugely successful in Oil and Gas. They are however heavily involved in both education and Motorsport. Whilst we all love to brag about our successes, it is often from our failure that we learn the most!

Asean Strategic Leadership Institute 2010 Automotive Conference
l will be helping ASLI promote their future Automotive Conference:
It will coincide with the Kuala lumpur Auto Show.

Proton, the Malaysian car company that owns Group Lotus intend to show their cars in the Geneva Auto show for the first time this year.
Presently, the Detroit Auto show is on. I have been many times. Not this year though!
Here is a link to the Detroit News. It is an interactive flash demo allowing you to design your own concept car! The Detroit News and Freep both give the show good coverage. Incidently, China has just become the largest buyer of automobiles in the world overtaking America. So I imagine the Shanghai show is gaining relevance.
I went to last years ASLI promoted Automotive conference with Alex Yoong as my guest. The conference did not revolve around Motorsport, and as such Alex probably wondered why he was there! We did have several chats with the Bufori representatives. Alex has done some 'Motorsport' work for them since.
It did give me some credibility and it was nice to know that Alex is sympathetic towards my project. (Motorsport University Malaysia).
If Michael Schumacher is reading this please feel free to contact me and I'll see if I can get you in this year...
I do think if ASLI want Motorsport specific people to attend they might want to organise the topics for discussion to reflect that.
I have been invited to paticipate this year. As such I will be expected to present a slideshow for discussion.
As Motorsport University Malaysia is still in the proposal stage I may use the one below for discussion purposes.
You will see some project figures for potential students on page 36. These figures add up to ten thousand virtual students. You must remember that I felt these figures made sense at the time (3+ years ago).
On my webpage, I have revised these figures to reflect the expectations of Malaysia's most successful private University, Limkokwing.
The CEO of this University is setting the bar at One Million virtual students in the next ten years.
In corporate circles we benchmark against the best, or our perceived competition, so my more recent webpage reflects the Limkokwing goal...

I might add that in the initial slideshare presentation, I mention my history with group Lotus, and their apparent ambivalence (uncertain or unable to decide about what course to follow; - wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn) towards the project.
Well, we have a whole raft of new management at Group Lotus, and a new entity in LotusF1 so I hope this will be reflected in their attitude to Motorsport University Malaysia.
Additionally, Petronas are a many faceted organisation. They are a major shareholder in Proton and group Lotus, as well as sponsors of Mercedes F1 among many other Motorsport teams. Perhaps they will give this project the consideration it deserves.

A Name does mean something... Why Lotus?
I hope everyone enjoyed their little holiday. It's freezing and snowy here. Sadly a lot of football matches are being postponed and travelling can be hazardous!
Talking of football... Today I commented on an article on the Crash website.
The article refers to Lotus F1.
The person after me made this comment:
Sorry to disappoint all you doubters, but a name does mean a lot. Take football as an example. 50 years ago a team might be made up of players all born within 10 miles of the ground. Now a Premiership team can be made entirely of overseas players and run by a far-east consortium, yet the fans still believe it's their team.
Chelsea and Man City are foreign (not British) owned or managed. So does the same apply to Formula One?
For some people Yes and for others No.
Certainly, Mercedes F1 are not German based or managed(Ref Ross Brawn)...
Did having Brawn and Scumacher at Ferrari make the team any less 'Ferrari'
Ross and Michael doing their version of the Italian job
Many feel Valentino Rossi should ride for Ducati. Yamaha and Honda before them felt otherwise...

Why is Lotus a bad name to use?
I have noticed that there is a mixed reaction from people regarding my proposal, and the issue of Malaysia in F1 generally.
The use of the Lotus name is also a point of contention among many.
First a bbc video link.
Here is a letter sent to me from someone well qualified to comment.
Why is it bad to use the Lotus name? There is a proud history to take advantage off, and i think its great that this name is back in Formula One. It will never be Team Lotus now, and the reason for that is because there is no more Team Lotus. People make a team, not a name and all the best people from the Team Lotus days have all left.
But, if Lotus F1 gets started again, then there is a possiblity that those engineers will come back. They are all still there in F1 and if the team is run well and sponsored well, why would they not come back. Ask any engineer worth their salt in F1 and they remember the Lotus brand fondly. As long as the team stays true to the concepts that Colin Chapman put in place, then it will attract quality engineers.
I would have to say that top people in their field are attracted to being on the cutting edge. F1 is the cutting edge.
From an educational aspect, it would wonderful if Motorsport University Malaysia had ties to this industry.
One major drawback in attracting students is the lack of job prospects at the end.
I agree. Even if in the future ten F1 teams set up in the region, there would not be enough jobs to employ the numbers I envisage.

However, I do feel that the skills that can be gleaned from Motorsport can be easily transferred.
Management/Engineering/Driving/ Problem solving/ ETHICS! / Sports psychology... The list goes on.
I sincerely hope that Petronas in particular can see this link, and use their Petro dollars to set up an institution that will hopefully outlive it's founders.
I sincerely hope that Tony Fernandes/Dany Bahar/Alex and Tengku Djan sit down with Proton's major shareholder (Petronas) and put their case. When doing so, please mention Motorsport University Malaysia.
There is much more to this than simply a podium finsh for LotusF1. The region should and could benefit!

Contacted CEO Lotus F1
My blog and website are in the public domain. My website has a video which is password protected.
I have given the password to Tony Fernandes organisation.
As I have stated previously, this project will compiment the new F1 initiative perfectly.
Here is a video of Tony explaining his reasoning behind his F1 involvement.
It is my hope that Tony will view my proposal. If he does, I feel he will see the potential immediately. I need

Lotus post £15 million loss. Still no CEO
The Norfolk Evening News 24 today reports that Lotus have posted a £15 million loss for the year.
Lotus currently have no CEO. Mike Kimberley having left in July. I wish them well.

Still no feedback on Motorsport University Malaysia. I know that all interested parties are aware of the project. I have posted The Plan online (google: motorsport university malaysia).
I'm enjoying the British summer (yes honestly!) and can't wait to start annoying the new guy with The Plan...
It's F1 this weekend so I'll be in front of the box.
Once again thanks to everyone who has supported me on the project.
Alex yoong will be busy for ESPN this weekend. Thanks to Alex for your visible support.
Talking of Alex. This video gives an overview of A1GP team Malaysia. Alex introduces the team, among other things.
